Before I go into my lighting dilemma, please check out an older post here for pictures of my seed starting setup.
Now that you've seen the setup, and my *tiny* grow light that only efficiently covers a 2 foot by 3 inch section, take a quick look at my new light here. I'm sorry I don't have a picture to post for you... I'm in hella pain from my kickboxing workout last night, and feeling very lazy today.
So, last night I received my new light, and when DH and I tried to hang it, the height adjusters wouldn't hold the weight of the light. I'm hoping you, my super smart and innovative readers (wink wink), can come up with some ideas to help me adjust my setup to hold a heavier light so I won't need to make a new one.
The PVC holds the weight perfectly, but the PVC screw shown below won't clamp down onto the wire tight enough, and the wire keeps slipping.

If I'm understanding your light set up correctly, as the PVC can take the weight, can you run a small gauge chain from light hangers at each end, and loop it around the PVC? To make it adjustable for height, you could use a small hook at the free end of the chain, to shorten or lengthen it as needed. Just a thought.
ReplyDeleteOh goodness, I couldn't figure out for the life of me how that green thing was spouting water. That's the wire! I'm not that bright.....so I obviously have no clue how to fix it besides wrapping it around itself or the bar and sinching it closed with a metal clasp that you can remove to lower or raise it. Think those things that hold those wire western necklaces together, only cinched tighter.
ReplyDeleteI would put screw hooks into the PVC and use chain instead of the wire.
ReplyDeleteNo problem. I'm assuming that is an 1/8" wire rope? If so, you need a special wire rope clip that is adjustable. It says that' it's "not for lifting", but that's just for liability purposes. Here ya go....part# 34785T4

Don't ask me, I use cheap shop lights, chain and S hooks ;-)
ReplyDeleteI'll bet EG comes up with an answer for you.
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! My brain just doesn't work with engineering stuff sometimes, and DH is really busy this week...
ReplyDeleteI like Curbstone and Liisa's ideas of the chain, but if I can use the same wire, as Ribbit and EG are suggesting, That would be great. Heading to the store to see what option is cheaper LOL. I hope to have the light up tonight.
No help, sorry. Just lots of commiseration.
ReplyDeleteYou're already way ahead of me with that grow light!
ReplyDeleteMaybe a piece of rubber (like a washer) in the bolt hole would help hold the wire? Without seeing the inside of the set-up, it is hard to tell what might help.
Have posted a solution to the problem on my blog, hope it helps :-)
