On Sunday I potted up my super leggy tomato plants. I went to the dollar store on a whim a while back and found 5 of these pots for $1. I should've bought more...
Here's what the plant's roots looked like after 40 days. Pretty healthy, yes? I repotted the plants in a mix of seed starting medium, compost, perlite, and a smidgen of Epsom salt and all purpose slow-release fertilizer.
After the tomatoes were done, I potted up my nasturtiums with the Little One's help. Here he is stirring the mix...
And then he helped fill the pots with soil...
Oh yes! My carrots are really taking off now that I'm shading them, and we're in for cooler weather than last week so I think they'll have a fighting chance now!
Have a terrific Tuesday!

The trench method would work great for those toms, and they'll be just fine. Having healthy plants is the main thing - in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteLovely Momma_S; I do like the gardener! ;)
ReplyDeleteWow! Your way ahead on tomatoes, and everything else! Must be pretty nice living in an area where you can grow longer!
ReplyDeleteI wish I had a place to grow when I lived in TX. That would have been nice!
As for potting and seeding indoors, it is way easier to vaccum up a little dirt than to clean paint or playdough out of the carpet! Besides, I had them doing it over a big pan and probably yelled alot..."keep the pots in the pan!!!" Eh, they still enjoyed it!
EG~Thanks for the suggestion. I'll be doing a form of the trench method, I guess... When the peas come out, I have to remove a portion of the soil to try to find the source of the roses that have popped back up (grrr). So when I put the soil back in, I'll put compost, supports, and the tomatoes in.
ReplyDeleteHi, Di! Thanks for stopping by! My helper loves playing in the dirt, and was really surprised when I actually *wanted* him to play in it and help me. He was so happy...
ReplyDeleteEG's right! Trench those babies. You'll have tomatoes far before any of us. Those carrots look fantastic.
ReplyDeleteRibbit~Yes Ma'am! teehee. And thanks. ;-)
ReplyDeleteYour carrots and your garden helper look super happy. I've not removed the remay that was protecting my lettuce from the critters because it seems to be providing some protective shade now, the lettuce was not happy to go from winter to summer so quickly last week. I wasn't complaining though. . .
ReplyDeleteWow, those carrots are looking great! Mine have yet to germinate. :(
ReplyDeleteYou'll have to dig a pretty deep hole for those tomatoes, although I'm sure plenty of more roots will grow from those super long stems.
Your tomato roots look great! I re-potted ours a week or so ago, looks like our tomatoes are at about the stage. We're scrambling to finish our raised boxes so we can get them outside. You got a great deal on your pots, and your carrots are looking wonderful.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous garden! And your helper is really intense on his task!! So precious! Your tomatoes look very healthy!
