To begin preparing my raised bed for all the green beans currently growing inside, I spent some time on Saturday removing the Sweetie Baby Romaines.
The smallest of the bunch went into a small micro-greens salad for myself. The largest heads shown below were pulled yesterday for dinner salads.
DH asked if it was store bought lettuce, and I was like, "Um, why?" I wanted to know before answering. He said it was fantastic, crisp lettuce, and was hoping it came from out back. "Yes! It came from out back," I said, proudly. My 8yo then chimes in sarcastically with his silly wide eyes, "This lettuce is from Outback?" Ah, my son has my corny, dry sense of humor... Poor kid... HA! ;-)
The rest of the romaines were moved to the raised bed at the back of the patio. You can click here for a different visual of both beds. The bed at the back only gets 2-3 hours of sun, so I figured moving them here will extend their season as the weather heats up.
I'll mulch this bed tomorrow when there's a break in the rain...

The rain is probably just what they ordered! Don't you feel like a genius when the weather puts its seal of approval on your transplanting?
ReplyDeleteWe're harvesting enough lettuce right now for salads every night.....of course, the man goes out yesterday and buys 4 count them, 4, packs of lettuce from the grocery.
ReplyDeleteWhatever. :(
Stefaneener~I'm glad it rained, because I forgot to water my transplants!
ReplyDeleteRibbit~ Your DH does grocery shopping? Lucky... Sounds like you need to have some full on dinner salads! Steak, cheese, tons of veggies--the works!
That's a good harvest of romaines both as seedlings and for food. Don't you love it when the family appreciates the taste of homegrown food!
ReplyDeleteOttawa~It's very nice having everyone cheer me on with their taste buds. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI also keep small plants for "micro greens" salads for my self. Thinning, plants that didn't grow as much, or whatever, they make good "gardener salads".
ReplyDeleteOut with the old and in with the new. At least you get to eat your old :> I planted some brassicas out yesterday and just interplanted them with my overwintered spinach. I'm thinking of pulling the spinach in a week or two, but for now I want both. I just hope it works and the broccoli doesn't just sit there.
