I thought I'd jump on the compost bin bandwagon that Erin from Garden Now - Think Later started. What a fun posting topic!
My compost bin is more like a "heap," and this is what it currently looks like. It's made from recycled pallets that I obtained through craigslist, and I added chicken wire to the inside to keep the pile's contents inside (not that they are right now LOL--go wind).
Oh! I just added the picture and realized I'm doing double duty with showing you my fork. Better late than never! I always keep it there even though I rarely ever turn the pile. I only use it for turning the pile, and never think about putting it away.
Here's another view of the heap. It's located in the back right corner of the yard behind the orange tree, and out of view from the house (behind me is more dirt and the cherry tree). That was the only way I could convince DH to let me have a pile.
All the green on top of the pile are clippings from the bushes between the lawn and dirt (on the right side of the above pic). They were thrown on a few days ago. I guess I should mix them in... sigh...
If I had more space, I would love to add more bins like DaBeardedOne has, but I'd have to convince DH to let me expand, and I don't see that happening. It's not too bad since there's only dirt around the heap, and things aren't added to it frequently.
Aren't my weeds lovely? That dirt plot is what attracted us to this home, only to find out after we moved in that it's shaded majority of the day (except first thing when I took the pic) by huge redwoods in our neighbor's yard. I've considered tilling the dirt, and making it a shade garden, but there's no way to easily water that area. Besides, I'm still holding on to the thought of it becoming a play area for chickens this fall or next spring.
Now it's your turn. Get out there and take some pics of your rotting piles!

Nice to see your bin :)
ReplyDeleteOh, I'd definitely vote for chickens! Think what they could do for your compost, not to mention they're lots of fun.
ReplyDeleteGreat Pile! I love the pallet composters, so simple and so efficient! Isn't it funny that all of our piles I have seen have the pitchfork in them?! Last year I SWORE I would take better care of my tools after jabbing the pitchfork into the compost and having it some back up handle only, LOL! Well, my pitchfork is still stored right in the pile. Chickens would LOVE playing in the compost, bonus they would deposit their manure and I bet they would eat the weed seeds out of there so your finished stuff would be even better!
ReplyDeleteIt's a lot fuller than the last time I saw it;)
ReplyDeleteThat area looks a bit like the back of our yard, bare and weedy!
Double dog dang! No compost pile for me, although I do have the man's fire pit where I throw all of my garden gunk...that's a compost pile until he burns it all, right?
ReplyDeleteI feel like such a compost bin failure. That's even worst than a compost failure!
ReplyDeleteYour fork has been saved for the next round of The Fabulous Forks, soon to be seen at Granny's place.
I keep thinking of putting in one of those pallet piles. I like how they look.
ReplyDeleteThat's all a person needs to compost - some type of enclosure. Of course granny's potty chair composter would work too. Hehe...
ReplyDeleteOh dry shade is the hardest to grow anything in! Though I do have a list of plants for dry shade bookmarked as I have a similar area, even they need watering occasionally. I think the chicken idea is the best yet. =)
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by, everyone!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a few of us have "dead space" in our yards...
EG~I hadn't thought of Granny's bin looking like a potty chair, but it does! LOL! Sorry, Granny... At the Maker Faire I went to, there *was* a display for building/using a toilet for turning human waste into manure. Great for 3rd world countries, but I draw the line at using my own waste around edibles...
