Harvest Monday

This weekend's harvest was the second to very last of my spring plants (only garlic left now), and my last harvest for a while. I'm glad I was able to get a few extra weeks of growth out of my Sweetie Baby Romaines by shading from the afternoon sun. A couple were showing signs of bolting (look at the front left head), so they needed to be pulled...
A few also had guests...
I think these were cabbage looper eggs since there were one or two hanging about...
My total harvest from that bed came in at 7 ounces. Sure, it isn't anything like Villager's pounds of lettuce, but it'll give us several meals worth of greens.
I took leftovers from my Mexican themed dinner on Saturday, and turned them into Southwestern chicken salads for DH and I. Nom!
I also harvested some greens and flowers from my Whirlybird Nasturtiums. They added a nice zest which complimented the vegetarian Southwestern Egg rolls (on the left of the pic), and salsa "salad dressing" perfectly.
While we were eating dinner, a grasshopper stopped by to hang out on the window screen. I caught him in a bug holder-thingy, and each boy was allowed to share a piece of their lettuce with it.
Each week Daphne over at Daphne's Dandelions hosts Harvest Monday. Check out her page to see what other's have been munchin' and crunchin' on this week.

  1. What pretty little romaines! I promise I won't brag about the dinner plate sized Buttercrunch I just harvested for tonight's dinner. I promise.

  2. Mmmm...southwestern chicken salad sounds lovely! I know, it's so difficult to keep up with Villager's greens, and they always look so fabulous!

  3. who knew those little bug houses could come in handy, LOL. My kids each have one too, though they haven't had any bugs in them yet!

  4. Granny~ Brag about it!!! I love seeing everyone else's fruits (and veg) of labor. My small garden = smaller results, is all...

CVF~ No kidding! Some day (when I get my plot over at the community garden), my harvests will increase exponentially... Until then, I'll just drool over everyone elses LOL.

Shawn Ann~ Yes, your post reminded me that I had that bug house burried in the shed, so thank you! So far this spring I've used it for the grasshopper, and a cabbage looper that the LO let out--darn!

  5. I'm also seeing the effects of greatly-enhanced soil and abundant water on size. That said, the children have decimated my lettuces to feed them to the bunnies, who eat more than grasshoppers, since they weigh much more.

Your dinner sounds great. Heeee -- my first verification word was "skephead." You can't make this stuff up.

  6. I think your harvest is just lovely. I can't wait for my romaines to be big enough to harvest. I hope they get bigger before they bolt too. Romaine is my favorite type of lettuce.

  7. That is a lovely bed of romaines! And some big nasturtium blossoms. Those cabbage moths must have been confused!

I checked out the SW egg roll recipe and it really sounds interesting. I love TexMex food, and I think it looks like a good use for some summer peppers and veggies. I like that the egg rolls were baked too.

  8. Villager~ I'm sure the egg rolls would've tasted a million times better fried, but it's healthier and easier to bake 'em. The original recipe is a smaller portion--maybe better for you and your wife (I tripled then modified portions for easier measuring, ie I changed from 1/4 + 2tsp to 1/3 cup). They were so delish, I may need to make again very soon.
