Harvest Monday

, Wow! Participating in Harvest Monday two weeks in a row! This may be a new record for me...

My sister-in-law visited this past weekend, and I was able to share lettuce and radishes from the salad table with her. That made this newbie gardener really happy!

Here are the last of the radishes for this season. If you look closely at the two radishes on the right, you can see where fungus gnat larvae have munched on them a bit (I've been treating the soil with BTi for two weeks, but was only able to find fly paper today to catch the adult gnats).

Also, my first broccoli harvest! A pittance of a harvest--maybe enough for my 8yo to eat with tonight's dinner, but still, it's a start!

I'll have a lot more broccoli coming soon... Just look at the side shoots the Waltham 29 variety puts out! I knew I'd get side shoots, but I imagined more of a large head, then a few baby heads, but this variety seems to grow mostly side shoots.
The "large" head on the right two pictures up came from this plant.

  1. Woohoo!! Broccoli is my go-to crop for the boy to eat. It's so cool, isn't it.

  3. How exciting! I love sharing the first harvests of the year. It's so nice when the garden gets growing again. I'm also a little jealous, it's not even warm enough here yet to *plant* radish seeds, let alone get a harvest from them. They look great!

  4. Ribbit & GrafixMuse~Broccoli is one of the first green things my 8yo would (and still will) eat! Wish my 2yo would eat it...

Jenn~With all that space you have, I'll be telling you *I'm* jealous of everything you're growing before you know it! It's nice having things to eat from out back, but it still feels so unnatural, and having blooms on trees in February is even odder!

  5. I get more side shoot from broccoli than a main head too. I've never been able to grow a really large broccoli head, but I can sure get side shoots.

  6. Really? I love the convenience of running to the back yard and grabbing what I need for dinner or lunch. Looking forward to lettuce, radish and spring peas in a little while.

I think you can probably thank El Nino for spring blossoms in Feb. Zoinks!

  7. Hello! We have so got to have an East Bay get together. . . I was just in your neck of the woods this morning at the main library.
That's the kind of broccoli I get. It adds up, but it looks pretty pathetic.
Radishes, eh, not my thing any more. I just don't have enough room to grow things I'm not crazy about.

  9. Stefaneener~I'd love to meet up! It'd be nice to meet another gardener in "real" life. ;-) Yeah, I grew radishes more to say "I did it" since they hadn't grown for me in the past...

Meredith~Thanks! Now we need it to get warm enough for summer yummies.
