Ode to Bug Hunting

Ok, not an "ode" exactly, but I can't think of the right word to use... Today the boys and I rode our bikes to the library (ok, the LO hitched a ride with me). I reluctantly--and sadly, returned the Garden Insects of North America. Already feeling lost without my 672 page bug reference, I thought I'd create a list for identifying bugs online... Please feel free to add your favorites! (I don't endorse any of these sites, just sharing to make others' lives easier...) 1. Naturally, GardenWeb's Pest and Diseases (a.k.a. Garden Clinic) gets first dibs on the list. http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/pests/ Got bug? Need help? This is your crew. 'Nuff said. 2. My most recent site find is What's That Bug? http://www.whatsthatbug.com/ People can send in pictures of bugs for identification. The replies, posted on the site can be humorous. Also, if you're feeling defeated by bugs in your garden, check out the "Carnage" section. It'll lift your spirits a bit, and help get you back in the game (or have you feeling bad for all of those hapless creatures that unnecessarily met their demise). 3. I plucked this bug gallery from Annie's Granny's comment on GrafixMuse's page: http://www.pbase.com/tmurray74/bugs Pretty pictures, not so many words... Helpful if you have a general idea of what type of bug you're trying to find. 4. I've enjoyed receiving Dave's Garden newsletters for a while now, and the Bug Files is a small section in this big website... http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/ Another site for visiting when you already have a good idea of what you're trying to identify. You'll find the technical information (order, genus, etc) on bugs here. If it's a common bug, you may have reader's responses and pictures, but it takes a lot of (unnecessary) clicks to get there. Happy hunting!
